Three Checks Before Renewing Your Cloud Servers

Renewal season is often treated as a simple purchase, but it is a window to re-check resource specs and purchasing options. Here is a three-step checklist.

Many companies treat cloud server renewal as a fixed finance calendar item. In practice, the one or two weeks before renewal are one of the few windows in the year when cost can be adjusted without changing architecture.

1. Pull the Last Three Months of Utilization

Look at three things: average CPU and memory utilization, when peaks occur, and actual disk and bandwidth usage. Instances averaging below 20% are often oversized; workloads peaking at fixed hours fit elastic policies better than year-round high specs.

How to Judge

  • Average below 20% with no burst demand: evaluate downsizing
  • Peaks at fixed hours: evaluate scheduled scaling
  • Memory near limit while CPU is idle: consider memory-optimized specs

2. Confirm Business Changes in the Next Six Months

Renewal cycles are usually annual, but planning may not look that far. List known milestones: new launches, promotions, seasonal peaks and organizational changes. Capacity planning should cover these rather than extrapolate linearly from current load.

3. Compare Renewal Price with New Purchasing Options

Renewal is only one option. Compare renewing the current spec, renewing after downsizing, and purchasing by committed usage. Include traffic, storage and snapshot costs; comparing instance unit price alone often leads to wrong conclusions.

How We Can Help

If you have an upcoming bill, send us the usage structure. We break spending into fixed and optimizable parts and compare renewal with alternative purchasing combinations. Prices are quoted after actual usage is calculated and are not published on the page.
